☀️ What Does SPF PA++++ Mean? A Simple Guide to Sunscreen Labels

Ever stare at a sunscreen bottle and feel like you’re reading a secret code? Between SPF numbers, PA ratings, and broad spectrum claims, it can feel like you need a decoder ring just to protect your skin. Let’s break it all down in cozy, Bee Well style!

☀️ SPF: Your Sunburn Shield

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures how well a product protects your skin from UVB rays — the rays that cause sunburns.

  • SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays

  • SPF 50 blocks about 98%

  • SPF 100 blocks about 99%

The higher the number, the more protection — but no SPF blocks 100% of UVB rays. And yes, you still need to reapply every 2 hours!

🌤️ PA++++: Your Anti-Aging Armor

PA is a rating system for UVA rays, which go deeper into the skin and cause premature aging, pigmentation, and can contribute to skin cancer.

  • PA+ = some UVA protection

  • PA++ = moderate

  • PA+++ = high

  • PA++++ = the highest UVA protection

If you’re protecting against dark spots, fine lines, or sun-induced melasma, look for PA++++ on your label.

Bonus tip: This rating is more common in K-beauty or Japanese sunscreens, which is one reason I love them in my spa retail area! I just ordered and will have some available for purchase soon!

“Broad Spectrum” — What It Really Means

In the U.S., if a sunscreen is labeled broad spectrum, it means it’s passed a test showing protection from both UVA and UVB rays. It's the FDA's way of confirming it does a little of everything — but it doesn’t guarantee strong UVA protection like PA++++ does.

So ideally? You want broad spectrum + SPF 30+ + PA++++ for full sun defense.

Other Terms You Might See

  • Mineral / Physical Sunscreen: Uses zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to block rays. Great for sensitive skin.

  • Chemical Sunscreen: Absorbs UV rays with ingredients like avobenzone or octinoxate. Tends to feel lighter on the skin.

  • Water-Resistant: Still reapply after swimming or sweating! It doesn’t mean waterproof.

  • Tinted SPF: Adds a touch of color and often better for preventing pigmentation because the iron oxides protect against visible light too.

Reading sunscreen labels doesn’t have to be overwhelming. When in doubt, aim for:

  • Broad Spectrum

And don’t forget to actually use it every single day — even when it’s cloudy, even when you’re indoors, and yes, even in winter. Your skin will thank you later ✨
